Pozzato és a legjobb olasz kerekesek meglepetésre akcióztak a Porto Recanati előtt bő 10 kilométerre leküzdendő, kisebbfajta, 3. kategóriás emelkedőn, majd 10-20 másodperc előnnyel érkeztek a hajrára a mezőny előtt a 206 km-es táv végén.
A Vinokurov, Nibali, Basso, Pozzato, Garzelli, Cunego, Scarponi, Pinotti, Pineau, Voeckler összeállítású bolyból az utolsó kilométeren Nibali és Vinokurov támadott, de Nibali nem ment Vinokurovnak egy métert sem, így a többiek felértek rájuk a célvonal előtt, s a papíron is legjobb sprinter, Pozzato győzött. Hogy teljes legyen a Katyusa csapat öröme, a hajrázó mezőnyt Robbie McEwen hozta be az élen. Az összetettben csak másodpercekkel változott a helyzet, akik elöl voltak javítottak kicsit.
